The U16 boys team entered the final game of the regular season needing a win against MRO, the next placed team.
Playing in front of the largest crowd of the season, there was no score in the first half with neither team able to convert opportunities into goals.
Nicholas scored early in the second half, but MRO quickly equalised. MRO would have won the title with a draw, so the Westmount team put heavy pressure on MRO and Nicholas scored his second goal with 15 minutes to go.
Westmount were under a sustained assault in the closing minutes of the game as MRO pushed their players forward. After defending a dangerous free kick from just outside the box, the Westmount team breathed a sigh of relief at the final whistle. Westmount 2 – 1 MRO.
Karl Koerich, head coach (and U21 player), congratulated the players after the game for keeping their nerve under extreme pressure in the closing minutes, and for demonstrating some excellent teamwork putting two goals in the net against a strong and determined MRO team.
Several players on the U16 boys team are in their sixth season with the club, having been part of the original WSC team in the first year the club started in 2012.
The team will now be focused on the playoffs in September aiming for the double.
