The U17M Wanderers have started off the season with a close 2-1 victory over Pointe Claire.
On a sunny and warm Saturday morning, the two teams played very evenly in their first outing of the season. There were few chances to score, but mid-way through the first half, a penalty kick was awarded when Nicholas was tripped in the opposing penalty area. Keane scored with a precision kick to the right of the keeper, putting Westmount up 1-0. A few minutes later, Mahdi took a free kick from 50 meters out and near the sidelines. The ball landed in a group of players in front of the goal and was deflected into the net by Kieran’s header giving a 2-0 lead.
Pointe Claire had its turn to take a penalty kick late in the first half. The kick was just out of reach of our diving GK, Neos , which cut Westmount’s lead to 1 goal to end the first half.
In the second half, the bigger Pointe-Claire team was continually pressing for a tie, but Westmount held them off until the final whistle with solid defensive plays to maintain the 2-1 lead.
